Graffiti vandalism can occur on all types of property, both public and private. If surfaces are left exposed with no protective coating, graffiti tags can soak deep into the surface making the removal process more difficult and time consuming.

Anti-graffiti coatings can be used to prevent graffiti from bonding to the underlying surface which can make the cleaning process much easier and more effective.

There are many types of anti-graffiti products available, each made specifically to protect specific surface types. But with so many choices of anti-graffiti coatings on the market, how do you know what type is best for your needs?

Basically, there are two main types of anti-graffiti protection, sacrificial coatings and non-sacrificial or long life coatings.

Sacrificial anti-graffiti coatings are applied to the surface to be protected, creating a barrier against stains. As the name suggests, this coating is removed as part of the cleaning process taking the graffiti with it.

Sacrificial coatings usually need to be re-applied or patch repaired after each graffiti removal, to again protect the surface.

These coatings are especially suitable for surfaces like sandstone, wood, and heritage listed buildings, but not suited to any surface where the heated high pressure water will damage it, like painted walls.

Non-sacrificial anti-graffiti coatings will ideally only have to be applied once and can last for years through many cleaning cycles as the protective layer is more permanent.

Though this type of coating is often more expensive, it allows for easier graffiti removal and lasts for a much longer period of time.

Long life coatings can protect surfaces for up to 10 years against graffiti penetration and removal can be performed hundreds of times. The cleaning process is often a simple spray and wipe, just like cleaning a window.

This type of coating is suitable for concrete, most natural stone, metal surfaces and signage.

Within the range of these types of coatings, there are options that can be either invisible once applied, or used to enhance the look of the surface. So the choice of what type of coating to use can depend on various factors like surface type, budget and the look you are wanting to achieve.
